In the cursed lands of The Frostfell, the veil between the cold fey wilds and the material plane are at their thinnest. Here, a group of people were cursed for rising up against a coven of hags that plagued their lives.
One fateful night, a group of Crimson Hunters, knights, guards and commoners ventured to the lair of a coven of hags atop the highest mountain of The Frostfell. For too long they paid tribute and lived in frigid misery. Aegon was a knight among these courageous souls.
Their venture up the mountain was perilous - terrible blizzards and nightmarish creatures tried to stop them every step of the way. Eventually, most of them found their way to the frozen lair at the peak. Those that died along the way would eventual haunt the mountain and woods as terrible undead if they did not succeed.
The hags greeted them as they entered their abode. They stood within a large chamber with an open ceiling revealing the full moon above. Bone chilling cackles came from each except for Grandmother Cynthia. She stood still like she was frozen solid or a life-like statue. A dozen small bird cages sewn into her fur cloak shifted back and forth as the small birds within moved around. Eventually, her voice unnaturally filled the chamber as the lights dimmed.
"You wield your mundane weapons and tools like you could actually do something. Leave now, and pay double your tribute when the time comes for your insolence. If not, you will never return home and live as beasts for all eternity."
Some commoners dropped their pitchforks and ran outside - the rest stood strong.
"The people are done living beneath you witches. The Crimson Hunters and I are here to put an end to you!" Aegon announced as he drew his greatsword.
"Act as insolent beasts, then you shall become as such!" Grandmother Cynthia responded as she cast a powerful curse upon the intruders of her lair. The birds trapped in the cages on her cloak began to flutter as their eyes glowed.
Soon after, the Crimson Hunters, knights and commoners lost control as their transformed into werewolves in the light of the full moon.
"Now, you can never leave the mountain or forest. You will be beasts until the end of days. Full of rage and hunger. Now, take your scraps, leave and never return!"
Losing all sense of control, they grabbed their destroyed equipment and dashed outside the lair. Blinded by rage, they attacked the people that ran away earlier.
The night ended, and they didn't return to normal. They made their way to the forest consumed by rage and hunger. For years, they would try to leave the forest as some unseen force would block their way. They would hunt as the forest grew more and more barren.
A decade passed before they started to control themselves. Eventually they could subdue the unnatural rage that they were cursed with. Aegon helped them form a settlement within the forest. He would lead them to try to be more than just beasts. They decided they would scared would-be adventurers away from the mountain so none could share their fate.
Decades passed, Aegon continued to lead them. They realized that they no longer aged like humans and the forest barely could sustain their hunger. Their attempts to regain themselves looked like they would be ending soon.
Fifty years after they were first cursed, a group of adventurers that proved themselves stronger than most came to The Frostfell seeking the hags. Aegon finally seeing the light of hope joined them as they ascended the mountain to finally end this.
